Islington Branch Library Quilts
Wentworth Hall
On August 24, 1999, this beautiful quilt was presented to the Islington Branch Library for permanent display. Completely hand-stitched and uniquely designed, this special project took two years to complete.
Three Islington Branch Library volunteers contributed to this quilt: Helen Young, Ginny Berglund, and Marian Manly. Each woman brought her own special touch to this project, and their combined artistry has provided the Branch Library with an heirloom to be treasured.
Marian Manly’s keen eye for detail, as well as precise cutting and blending of color and pattern was critical in the superior quality of the finished product. Her quilting expertise was essential to its beauty.
Ginny Berglund’s hand-drawn original design taken from a drawing of Wentworth Hall is the centerpiece of the quilt. Her meticulous piecing and exquisite handwork from the bell tower to the trees and shrubs bring the quilt to life.
Helen Young’s creative flair shows in the scalloped edging pattern in the border, and her wonderful eye for color and style adds a warm dimension to the bookshelf motif. Her beautiful hand-stitching blends with Marian’s and Ginny’s to give the heartfelt feeling of community spirit one feels in looking at the quilt. We thank them for this gift to all patrons for years to come.
The Little Engine that Could
This quilted wall hanging was made in loving memory of Amy Sullivan. “The Little Engine That Could” by Watty Piper was a favorite story to Amy. The little blue engine in the story was as Amy was ~ determined and spirited. The quilt was made by Donna Gillis, Debbie Gallagher, and Joanne Beaupre in 1998.
