Parents

We encourage all parents and caregivers to come and take full advantage of our programs and materials. Children’s Department staff members are always available to recommend good books and other library materials including audiobooks, children’s magazines, DVDs, and CDs. We also offer assistance selecting materials for homework assignments, including research projects, book reports, and more.

In addition to offering programs for children, the Children’s Department is a wonderful place to just visit with your child. We offer comfy chairs to snuggle up with your child and share a good book with one another. We offer a small play area with educational toys, including puzzles, a play kitchen and train table. This area also boasts a large selection of board books to be borrowed or enjoyed together in the library.

Besides our extensive collection of children’s materials, we have a Parenting Collection. This collection features books on parenting topics including pregnancy, adoption, sleep and potty training, school preparedness, and puberty. We also now have books on fun indoor and outdoor family activities and cookbooks to jazz up a school lunch or wow even the pickiest of eaters.

Please Note:

Children under the age of 8 years must be accompanied and actively supervised by a caregiver, aged 13 or older, at all times in the library.

Westwood’s Early Childhood Department and the Early Childhood Council

Westwood Early Childhood supports families with children ages 0-8 through family programs, parent education, resources, and community engagement.

The Westwood Early Childhood Office, a Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Program, serves families with young children birth through school age. In an effort to support parents in their role as their child(ren)’s first teacher, we have coordinated programs to provide brain-building learning opportunities. Parents will assist their child as they develop/practice basic child development skills. We also offer parent programs to discuss a variety of child development topics. With financial support from the Department of Early Education and Care, The Westwood School Department, the Westwood Young Women’s Club, and other grants, we are able to offer programs free of charge. Registration is required for most programs and available to all Westwood residents.
