How an Upcycled Van Becomes a Bookmobile

COA Van turned Bookmobile

In 2022, the library received stewardship of a 2010 Ford Transit Van from the Council On Aging as they were receiving a new one to continue to offer rides and services to the seniors in town. The Library decided to “upcycle” the van and turn it into Westwood’s first Bookmobile!

The Board of Library Trustees and Town Administration were in full support of this project as it would give the vehicle a new life and ability to still serve the residents of Westwood albeit in a slightly different fashion than its previous iteration. Together, with capital funding and the library’s 21st Century Funding, we were able to rebuild the inside of the van and add new flooring, specialty shelving, a small desk, skylights, dedicated Wifi, and a small starter collection of books!

In 2024, the new and improved Bookmobile made its debut at Westwood Day and soon after attended the Westwood Young Women’s Club’s Harvestfest, University Station’s Trunk or Treat Event, regular monthly visits to COA and Highland Glen, and local elementary schools in town. We are excited about expanding visits and opportunities to bring resources, books, and Wifi to every corner of Westwood!
