Westwood Public Library is for Everyone

We welcome our children and teens with dedicated spaces, programs, and resources while ensuring a safe, respectful environment for all. Parents and caregivers are responsible for supervision, and children under 10 may not be left unattended. All youth are expected to follow library policies. By balancing freedom, safety, and accountability, the library creates a welcoming space where young patrons can learn, explore, and enjoy.

General Library Rules

  • Do not leave personal belongings unattended. The library is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Food and drink are permitted only in the Gallery area of the library.
  • Shirt and shoes must be worn by all children ages 3 and up on library premises.
  • The Westwood Library Children’s Program Room is for official or booked library programs only. The public may not enter unless a librarian is present.

Restroom & Diapering Policy

Restroom use in the Children’s Room is limited to children aged 12 and under and adults accompanying children. Children’s Room bathrooms have changing tables. Diaper-changing must only occur in the bathrooms, not public areas. Please take used diapers with you. Plastic bags are provided.

Supervision of Children & Teens

Expectations for Behavior

  • Children and teens must follow the Behavior Guidelines of the Westwood Public Library.
  • Parents/caregivers are responsible for the behavior of their children at all times.
  • If children violate policies, they may be asked to leave or lose privileges. If refusal occurs, the Westwood Police may be notified.

Unattended Children

  • Children under 10 years old may not be left unattended in the library, per Massachusetts General Law 119, Section 39.
  • Children 10 and older may be in the library without an adult, but should not be left for extended periods. They must have a reliable way to contact their caregiver.
  • If a child under 10 is left alone and the caregiver cannot be found, the police will be contacted.

Older Children and Teens (Age 10+)

  • Tweens and teens must behave respectfully and follow library rules.
  • They should be reachable by caregivers while in the library.
  • If disruptive, they may be asked to leave without caregiver notification.

Adults in Youth Areas

  • Adults unaccompanied by children must remain in the adult section unless using youth materials.
  • Library staff may ask unaccompanied adults in the Children’s or Teen areas to relocate.

Technology Use in Children & Teen Areas

Age Guidelines

  • Children’s Room Computers: For ages 5–12. Under 5 must be with an adult.
  • Teen Room Computers: For ages 11–18.
  • Others should use adult section computers.

Internet Use

  • All patrons must follow the Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Library staff do not monitor internet access.
  • Parents/guardians are responsible for what their children view online.

Privacy & Courtesy

  • All users, including children, are entitled to computer privacy.
  • Headphones must be used with public or personal devices.
  • Cell phones may be used briefly, but must not disturb others. Keep ringers silent and volume low or inaudible.

Library Programs & Participation

General Guidelines

  • Children of all ages must follow behavior rules during library programs.
  • Parents/caregivers are responsible for young children during joint programs.
  • Technology (e.g., phones) should not be used during early childhood programs.

Age-Specific Rules

  • Programs for Ages 0–5: Designed for parent/child participation. Caregivers must remain engaged.
  • Programs for Ages 5–10:
    • Parents must stay in the library building.
    • Children must follow behavior guidelines.
    • Caregivers will be notified if a child is disruptive and the child will be asked to leave.
  • Programs for Ages 10+:
    • Parents may leave the library, provided the child can contact them.
    • Disruptive children will be asked to leave the program without caregiver notification.
